Careers Panel

10:00 AM 11:00 AM

Sarah Avery (2017 ACT Law Society President):

Sarah is a Senior Associate with Ken Cush & Associates, assisting clients with personal injury claims, other civil issues, and criminal matters. Sarah also represents specialised professional indemnity insurers, and has a keen interest in assisting professionals (including lawyers) facing occupational discipline proceedings and negligence claims. Admitted in 2007, Sarah has been engaged with people across the whole of the legal community and the ACT community. She was appointed senior Vice-President of the Law Society in 2015. She is also on the Pro-Bono Clearing House Panel, the Legal Aid Review Panel, the Functions Committee, and is a mentor in the Young Lawyers Mentor Program. Sarah served as a member of the Law Society Council during 2009-2012, and has been a member of the Criminal Law Committee.

Sarah’s first-hand experience with several of the ACT’s most controversial laws, and front-line experience with the ACT judicial system means that she brings a valuable perspective and experience to the Council. Sarah brings a fresh and enthusiastic approach to the Presidency, along with a strong desire to protect the interests and reputation of the ACT legal community while serving the broader community.
Jonathan Smithers (CEO, Law Council of Australia):

Jonathan Smithers arrived in Australia and began his role as Chief Executive Officer of the Law Council in September 2016, directly after the completion of his term as President of the Law Society of England & Wales.
Prior to becoming President, he served on the Executive of the Law Society, having been involved in local law societies for over 25 years.
Jonathan also held positions on the Membership Board and the Law Society Gazette Editorial Advisory Board in addition to serving on Council for ten years.
He co-authored the Law Society Conveyancing Protocol and the Society's Code for Completion by Post and represented the Law Society as a media spokesperson on a broad range of legal issues.

Jonathan began his articles in 1984 at CooperBurnett Solicitors in Tunbridge Wells, England. He became an equity partner at the firm in 1990 and was appointed to lead despite his relative youth during a challenging period in the 1990s UK recession.
Gary Ulman (2016 NSW Law Society President, Chair of NSW Law Society’s Graduate Employment Programme Working Group):

Gary is the Immediate Past President of The Law Society of New South Wales. As the 2016 President, Gary established and Chaired the Society’s Future Committee which conducted an inquiry into the future of law and innovation in the profession. In the course of the inquiry over 100 witnesses were interviewed. The inquiry report was presented on 29th March 2017.
In 2015-16 Gary Chaired the Society’s Graduate Employment Programme Working Group and he is the current Chair of the Society’s Professional Conduct Committee and Deputy Chair of the Litigation Law and Practice Committee.
A former partner with MinterEllision for over 30 years, Gary specialized in commercial dispute resolution work and conducted litigation in most State and Federal Court and Tribunals. Gary is now in private practice as a mediator and advisor on dispute resolution management. He is also a regular presenter on topics such as commercial dispute resolution, property and commercial lease disputes as well as legal ethics and professional conduct.
